looking-up

“Bumps For Boomers boosted my overall confidence for skiing 500%, and my confidence in skiing bumps 1000%.”

Welcome to Bumps For Boomers

I’m Nancy Hummel and I’m Bob Mattice. We’re Aspen ski instructors and the new owners of Bumps For Boomers.

Bumps For Boomers is a program founded here in Aspen. Since 2001, Bumps For Boomers has helped thousands of intermediate skiers learn how to ski bumps, powder, and black diamond terrain with shill and confidence.

We have a proven technique that is only taught right here at Bumps For Boomers in Aspen.

In just four days, you’ll learn the skills you need to ski moguls and advanced-level terrain with grace, efficiency, and confidence. You get a ton of personal attention in a small group setting.Instead of looking at a mogul field and saying “Oh No!” you’ll be wanting to ski the terrain over and over. Your skiing friends and family members will be amazed at your progress.

So … if you’re excited about skiing and taking your skills to the next level, take some time to go through all the information on this page.

You’ll discover more about Bumps For Boomers and how it’s so effective. You’ll meet our experienced instructors. You’ll hear from Bumps For Boomers alumni … and how the program transformed their skiing. You’ll learn more about Aspen. You’ll get all the information you need to decide if Bumps For Boomers is a good fit.

Please remember that thousands of skiers look at Bumps For Boomers every season but we can only accept a limited number of skiers.

And one more thing … Bumps for Boomers is for every adult skier… not just boomers.

It’s great you’re here and we can’t wait to meet you and help you become a totally different skier.

Just the word “MOGULS” can frighten most intermediate skiers

And that’s understandable. Bumps present a challenge. The terrain is irregular. Snow conditions are variable. Mogul runs are either steep or very steep. And, by definition, the terrain is never groomed.

Very few intermediate skiers have received the highly-specialized instruction that shows skiers how to ski bumps effectively.

So it’s easy to try a bump run, get out of control, and get tired, sweaty, and frustrated very quickly.

That’s not ideal, especially when a ski vacation is a major commitment … and the skiing is supposed to be a lot of fun.

What if that could be totally different?

On this page, you’re going to discover a program called BUMPS FOR BOOMERS.

For 23 seasons, this famous program has helped almost 5,000 skiers overcome a fear of the bumps and learn how to ski moguls with athleticism and grace…and with control.

Even better, the skills translate to powder, crud, and steeps.

BUMPS FOR BOOMERS takes skiers from the dreaded “Intermediate Rut” to tackling black diamond and even double black diamond terrain.

On this page, you’ll discover…

Here’s the most important thing about this page and BUMPS FOR BOOMERS … making the transition from “Intermediate” to “Advanced” skier is simply a ton of fun. You’ll gain an awesome sense of achievement.

Most participants arrive in Aspen with a deep-seated fear of moguls and expert terrain. In just 4 days, they leave with the tools and skill set to handle almost every challenge on the mountain… even the gnarliest bumps.

So if you’ve always looked at accomplished skiers and said, “I want to ski like THAT” then pay close attention to this page and BUMPS FOR BOOMERS.

“I learned how to ski SO MUCH BETTER … with elegance, efficiency, and balance.” Lynnell Mickelsen.

Low-Impact and Ultra-Efficient Approach

Bumps for Boomers provides a focus on low-impact techniques which are friendly to your knees, back, and other joints … without the need for super-fast reflexes. The program teaches specific techniques and uses specialized equipment.

These techniques provide clarity when it comes to …

A Specialized And Unique Program That’s Only Available Through Bumps for Boomers

Since 2001, Bumps for Boomers has been using a unique and highly-specialized method to help intermediate skiers develop confidence and vital skills in moguls and “off-piste” terrain.

In just 4 days, you will quickly improve your skiing skills, extend your skiing longevity, and ski challenging terrain confidently and gracefully.

Bumps For Boomers is NOT a knees-to-the-ears Olympic-style approach to mogul skiing where the goal is crazy speed. We provide an intelligent and sane approach to mastering the bumps. The goal is to help you ski with:

Instead of being a sweaty and out-of-breath mess at the bottom of a mogul run, you’ll be balanced, happy, and ready for more mogul runs and black diamonds.

Discover how to enjoy deep powder.
Become a more versatile skier.

The Challenge of Moving From Groomed Terrain To Bumps and Black Diamond Runs

Many athletic, experienced, and accomplished skiers can ski successfully on groomed green and blue terrain.

But when they head to moguls, crud, and ungroomed terrain, things become less predictable. In fact, these skiers struggle down this more challenging terrain and it’s no longer fun to ski.

Why does this happen?

There are five reasons.

  1. The terrain is different and requires specialized skills and technique.
  2. It’s easy to lose balance and “get in the back seat” and this means a loss of control.
  3. Few ski schools have a proven technique for learning how to ski moguls.
  4. It takes a dedicated effort and commitment to gain the skillset.
  5. Skiing moguls and terrain isn’t easy … unless you have the skills.

So if you’ve been struggling with moguls and more advanced terrain, it’s understandable. Skiing this terrain is a challenge and becoming a much more versatile skier requires specialized instruction … and that’s what you get with Bumps For Boomers.

Bumps for Boomers Has Four Phases

PHASE 1: Ski For Life™ Skills Foundation

First, we build a Ski For Life™ foundation of good skiing skills that will make you a much better skier and extend your skiing longevity. These foundations give you the skills you need to tackle black diamond terrain.

The emphasis is on balance, control, and efficient movement patterns that end the fatigue that can come with more challenging terrain.

PHASE 2: Bumps for Boomers ® Mogul Skiing Technique

Once you’ve mastered foundational skills, we introduce a clear and easy-to-understand approach to becoming a confident and proficient mogul skier. In this phase, you will:

  1. Gain new insights that will demystify and simplify the complexity of mogul runs and help you use the unique features of mogul terrain to your advantage.
  2. Learn smart, proven tactics that help you turn challenging mogul runs into easily skiable terrain.

You practice and experience these new mogul skiing techniques on groomed runs before progressing into a mogul field.

PHASE 3: Rapid Improvement Through Accelerated Learning

Bumps For Boomers provides simple, easy-to-learn concepts that emphasize the techniques you must have when skiing the moguls successfully.

These concepts include:

  • Stance And Balance
  • Turn Mechanics
  • Precision Drifting
  • Speed Control

Then it’s time to put all the put all the concepts together on groomed terrain and then in the bumps.

PHASE 4: Mogul Tactics

Yes … technique is vital in the bumps. But tactics are also crucial. This means learning how and where to start a turn on each mogul, and the different routes through the moguls.

The techniques in Bumps for Boomers also emphasize:

  1. Learning to ski smarter … instead of relying on fast reflexes and brute strength.
  2. Gaining more confidence in the bumps.
  3. The “Green Line” and The “Blue Line” and how to “read” a mogul field for maximum control.
  4. The correct use of the arms, hands, and poles … these have a remarkable impact on how someone skis, especially when it comes to balance.
  5. Correctly anticipating acceleration of the skis in the moguls.

These techniques comprise the “core” of The Bumps For Boomers Program.

How A Former Apple Executive Helped Thousands of Intermediate Skiers Become Advanced Skiers

Joe Nevin was an Apple executive. He worked for Apple for 12 years during the “Think Different” years.

After leaving Apple, he moved to the Aspen area and became a ski instructor.

He quickly noticed that intermediate skiers were struggling in the moguls.

So he started an all-new program called “Bumps for Boomers.” He identified key techniques and tactics that accelerated progress. Thus … in 4 days, he helped skiers from all walks of life, and (mostly) baby boomers, move from the blue runs to the black runs.

The first participants arrived in Aspen in 2001 and since then, thousands of skiers have graduated from the Bumps for Boomers program and totally transformed their skiing.

In 2023, Joe “handed the baton” to Bob Mattice and Nancy Hummel, both experienced instructors with The Ski and Snowboard Schools of Aspen/Snowmass

Let’s Meet The Instructors In The Program

We’re pretty sure he’s the only M.I.T. graduate who ‘grew up’ to be a ski instructor.

He returned to the High-Tech industry in 1979 when Andy Grove recruited him to work at Intel. After retirement Joe started a 2nd career to follow his passion for skiing. Having previously taught skiing at Alpine Meadows in Lake Tahoe, he and his wife Nancy moved to Aspen in 1998 where he began teaching for the Aspen Skiing Company and subsequently founded the BUMPS FOR BOOMERS program.
